The 13'4" Swampscott Rowing Dory is a beautifully balanced classic boat model inspired by the traditional New England dories of the mid-19th century. Originally designed for the fishermen of Massachusetts, this boat became renowned for its seaworthiness, smooth handling, and elegant simplicity—qualities that made it one of America’s most enduring small-boat designs.

This 30-inch handcrafted scale model captures the timeless charm of the original Swampscott Dory with remarkable precision. Built to order by our master craftsmen, each piece is constructed using the traditional plank-on-frame method and premium woods such as mahogany, teak, and cedar, along with other fine exotic materials. Every model requires approximately 4–5 months of meticulous handcrafting to complete, ensuring that each detail—from the gentle flare of the sides to the smooth curvature of the hull—is faithfully represented.

Throughout the process, we provide photo updates for your review and approval at key stages:

- Hull shaping and planking
- Interior seating and structural detailing
- Final sanding, varnishing, and finishing touches

Upon completion, your model will be carefully packed in a reinforced custom wooden crate for secure international delivery.

History:

The Swampscott Rowing Dory was developed around 1840 in Swampscott, Massachusetts, by Theophilius Brackett for fishing and hauling lobster pots. It features a rounded hull for better buoyancy and surf launching, a flat bottom to rest upright on the beach, and no keel to pass smoothly through waves. Typically measuring 14–18 feet in length, it was admired for its easy handling and excellent seaworthiness.

Evolved from the earlier Wherry and bateau designs, the Swampscott Rowing Dory later became popular as a recreational sailboat—known as the clipper, alpha, and beachcomber dories—raced along the Massachusetts coast in the early 20th century. Praised for its fine craftsmanship and graceful form, the Swampscott Rowing Dory is regarded as the “aristocrat of the dory clan.”
